Commemoration of World Press freedom Day

Press Clubs all over the country commemorated the World Press Freedom Day, in their own way. Most of press clubs used this occasion to meet their stakeholders and discussed how to improve their relationship.

Press Clubs were supported to conduct various activities as part of Commemoration of the World Press Freedom Day. Workshops to discuss various ethical and professional issues were organized. Some of the Press Clubs’ members visited remotest areas with the objective of meeting marginalized people, whose life is scantly reported by the media.

Classic examples are members of Rukwa Press Club who visited Kipili and Manda Kerenge villages, along Lake Tanganyika shores where there is no primary school while their Singida Press Club counterparts visited Hadzabe, remnants of hunters-gatherers living in the deep forests.

Similarly, this occasion provided the general public in the respective regions with an opportunity for the general public to learn about Press Club and related operations and obligations in terms of serving the societies. The activity was widely reported in the media.

At the national level, UTPC collaborated with various media institutions in organizing for a conference attended by stakeholders from all East African countries.

The opening ceremony of the occasion was graced by the East African Community Secretary General, Dr Richard Sezibera. The central theme of the conference was Safer and better working environment for journalists in East Africa. UTPC used this occasion to launch the Daud Mwangosi Media Support and Development Fund as well as donating Tsh 5,000,000/= to the widow of Mwangosi, Ms Itika Mwangosi. At the end of the conference, the participants adopted the Mount Meru Declaration which was calling upon various stakeholders to play their parts in promoting freedom of the media and safety journalists.
